I was driving along minding my own business when the timing chain came off of my 78 F-250 with 400 engine. I towed it home and have the new timing set ready to go on, my question is: As long as the cam and crank timing marks are aligned, will the timing be correct? I am thinking it is possible for the marks to be aligned and the timing to be 180 degrees out. Am I right about this? The old chain came off while I was driving so there is no way I can be sure where the cam and crank gears were originally positioned. Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes-as long as the marks are lined up, the timing will be correct.
No matter where everything stopped when the chain came off, the marks on the gears indicate top dead center.
You can see 180 degrees out when installing the distributor, because one rotation of the crank equalls one half rotation of the cam(which can't be seen due to the timing cover). If a person could see the position of the cam at all times, installing dizzys would be a breeze!
That is very clear - thanks! That was what I had been thinking, but then I confused myself. The distributor rotor is pointed at #1 cylinder when the timing marks are aligned, so I feel pretty confident that this engine will start when I get it together. I need the truck running today, so check back later and i will let you know how everything turned out. Thanks again!

Yes it cranked a couple of times and started right up. I was really surprised at how easy it went, I was expecting to have some trouble. I have been driving it for a couple of days now and it has never ran better. Thanks for the assist, I appreciated your help.

Out of curiosity, how many miles were on the motor when the chain went? my 78 400 had about 360,000 or so on it when the chain slipped... just as a heads up I also had a push rod get bent...
