This probably belongs in the engine section however, I have a std bore Cleveland 351 block without main bearing caps, I also have a set of perfectly good 351 Cleveland main bearing caps from another block not usable due to the need to bore more than 30 thou'.
I assume I should have the caps fitted and line bored/checked however are tolerances good enough in production to fit and check for crank binding?
without line honing or boring them your ,in for major problems, with bearing fit. oil clearance ,
best move you can do is talking to your local engine machine shop..
If I have to change a cap on a block it is always nice to have a few to try because sometimes I'll find one that's pretty close and it only needs a little bit of trimming and a line hone to make it work. If I can't find one that fits very well then I end up having to cut the cap a whole bunch and then line bore that one before finishing up with a line hone. This would be a pain to do on all five caps.
I think I would probably sonic test the block that won't make .030 over and see if it'll go to .040. I've had to do .040 quite a few times on a Cleveland.
