89 F250 4WD 5.8 liter, 5 speed manual transmission. Having starter noise like it has trouble disengaging. Ring gear looks fine. I installed a new starter which is designed for manual transmission. I get the same noise as if the starter is having trouble disengaging. By shimming the starter out a half inch the noise became minimal. I think this truck originally had an automatic transmission. It now has a 5 speed manual. Is it possible I have a flywheel/ring gear designed for an automatic now attached to a manual tranny? I see that starters are different based on whether auto or manual transmission. Any ideas?
Thanks for the input everyone!
1. Yes it has separator plate.
2 Ring gear is good.
3. The reman starter I just installed is the model it is supposed to have according to the data I could find.
Since there is no damage being done to the ring gear and the truck cranks fine I think I will just live with it for now.
