I’ve got a 95 4.9 auto f150, starter was howling at idle like it was was getting spun by then engine and I could hear it when I shut the truck off too, I replaced the starter and it makes no noise at idle anymore, however when I shut it off I can hear this faint squeaking until the engine stops, what is the issue. Before you say it yes I know the automatic and manual starters are different sizes yes I got the right starter and it never did it even with the stock starter which was from 1995 then randomly started doing the squealing but now I can only hear it when i shut it off, are the starter’s adjustable? I can’t find any starter shims for my truck and the flywheel looks perfectly fine but I don’t wanna destroy my new starter if the engine is spinning it over.
Is that faint squeaking coming from the starter itself? It may go away after the parts wear together some. Who knows how long it was sitting before you installed it..

Well i can’t hear it while cranking but the old starter was squeaking then the new one is squeaking but it’s so much quieter that I only hear it when I shut the engine off I wouldn’t think a starter should be spun by the engine while it’s running

Reason: Too keep this thread short as possible
I can't imagine the flywheel wouldn't kick the starter the rest of the way out if the bendix wasn't working 100% for some reason. A way to test, i think, would be to fire the truck up cold, and keep a hand on the starter for a brief moment and see if you can feel it spinning yet, or getting warm fast.

Alright will do that I’m also going to post a video if I can figure out how to I’ll link a YouTube video
Could that be a split/leak in the air pump plumbing?
If the starter needs shimming, in my Chevy days I used to use cheap old feeler gauge blades between starter and block.
Holy smokes I was not expecting it to be that loud. If your starter was moving fast enough to make that noise, i'd expect it to be very hot, and possibly also generating & backfeeding a current into the charging system. I'm not familiar with automatic transmissions, but i truly hope you find the source of that noise! That is wild!
Okay so I found the noise yesterday I had a blockage in the pcv. I pulled the dipstick out and the noise went away so I thought something bad had happened to my motor but then I pulled the pcv off while it was running and put the dipstick back in and no noise, for some reason it caused suction/ pressure in the motor and would make the howling noise from the bellhousing area. I had a piece of electrical tape wrapped around my pcv because the grommet it stretched and the pcv would blow out and I had a family member suggest the tape to keep the pcv in the grommet well the tape came undone barely and was blocking off the pcv
