Custom Rear end?

Ive got an 83 F-250 XL regular cab long bed that has what would appear to be an 8.8 rear end with 8 lugs. Searching the web hasn't done anything but add confusion as most data bases insist it has to be a Dana 60. And Ford never made an 8 lug 8.8....
This axle shows no signs of any customization whatsoever. Anyone ran into this? Am I going to have to start counting splines to figure out what bearings, shims, seals to order 😅 The Truck has an axle code of B6.

Best I can tell you have a Ford LD 8.8.

8.8 vs. Dana is easy to tell as the rear covers are very different.

Considering what a departure it is from the "standard" for 3/4 ton axles** it is surprising you don't see more about it. It should at least be an * in the text and a little note saying "Yes, Ford put 8 lug axles in an 8.8" diff....." .

** "standard for 3/4 ton axles" = Dana 60......

Completely agree!
if a fella was just going to assume its an 8.8 what year model should I shoot for since the folks at the part store cannot seem to find anything without YMM...?

Here are all the rearend options in 1983 for a F250. You can see yours is the 3rd one from the bottom of the list. A nationwide search reveals they are sprinkled throughout the states, and a used one is very reasonably priced.

Can't they find the right parts under your '83 F250? What is the axle capacity? That should be part of the search as well.

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_8251166

Not sure that will come up for you but it's just a search of Napa on line for rear axle bearings for '83 F250. They only offer that one kit, so if you had a different axle for that year I guess you have to shop elsewhere.....

It cross references to many other Fords with the 8.8.

I would not use a local parts store for anything like what you are after unless you can get the numbers off the bearings & seals and even then it would have to be a NAPA.
If you are looking to rebuild / change gear ratio(s) give https://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/
A call as they know their stuff as I have used them many times for different cars & trucks, one was my AMC 20 rear axle drag car.

You'd think! This is where the it has to be a D60 or 10.63 err whatever its started. I nicely asked if he would please follow me to the parking lot where i showed him what appears to be an 8.8 with 8 lugs (CARQUEST)
