What type of Dana Rear end in 86 f-150
My buddy has an 86 f150 4x4 and his has a 9 inch. If it has no coverpan bolts (coverpan is non-removable) on the back of the housing its a 9 inch, if it does it will be an 8.8.

For what it's worth, the Dana 44 has a ring gear diameter of 8.5", the 8.8, well 8.8" and the same for the nine. A Dana 60 has a ring diameter of 9.75". There are other things to consider, the D60 is the only full-floater design for the rear. All the others are semi-floating. Not sure on the rear application of the D44 as far as axle retension, but the 8.8" uses a "C" clip in the diff (break an axle, lose the wheel), the nine uses a pressed bearing and retainer plate on the end of the axle (lose a wheel only if the break is at the flange). Personally, other than the D60, I believe the the nine is the strongest.

What type of Dana Rear end in 86 f-150
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Dec-01 AT 07:48 PM (EST)]Fairly easy, just look in the center of the wheel, if it's the brake drum you are looking at, then it's a semi. If there is a hub in the center, kinda like the front on a 4x, then it's a full-floater. This really refers to the way the weight of the truck is carried, a semi-floating rear only "floats" the axle at the diff, the weight of the vehical is on the axle thru the bearings at the flange or outer end of the tube. A full-floating has seperate wheel bearings that actually carry the weight of the vehical, like on the front of solid axle 4x's and the axle just "floats" inside the axle tube on both ends. Hope this helps! Sorry, didn't mean the 10.25" or any other axle other than those I mentioned when refering to the "only" full-floating design, I have never seen a full-floating D44 rear, for the rear, although all front ones are.

I have read that the 10.25 and the D60 are really close in strength...with a slight edge to the D60. (off the wall opion start......now) BUT if you want to get a strong axle that is almost everywhere....the 9" is the way to go....you dont need a D60 or full floater unless you are going to seriously run rocks with locker all the way around or GOBS of HP. The 9" doesnt use C-clips and has lots of bearings to support it (Pocket Bearing on the Pinion gear) AND its a 3rd member axle....Man you can take it out and do the gears on the bench....OR take it out and take it to a machine shop...Either way, labor for set up is less. Also....upgrade parts are way easy to find for the 9" Its also weighs less than a full floter. Im done....remember that they also ran a Dana 60 that was a semi-floter (mid-70's). Lots of info in P4W&OR April 2000....see saving thoes old mags do pay off!
