My '76 F-150 had equal length 28 spline axles that ran just fine. It was a stock, limited slip unit original to the truck. So are you sure that all 9" rear axles used different length axles?

In my looking around to try and sort this problem out I came across this discussion a few times. I believe that the dent sides and newer had even length axle shafts, and earlier trucks had one shaft longer.
