My Son's 95' Bronco just started with a noise we're trying to identify. His wife was driving all is ok, she stops at a light and when she goes on green it makes a noise like a bang or a sharp metal to metal noise. I had him jack it up and spin the wheels and there's a slight noise at the drivers side wheel. I then had him pull the diff cover and send me pics and there small pieces missing off the axle spyders. He says there were very small metal shards out of the case but nothing bigger than 1/8". None of the teeth are missing, just a few chipped. Everything is still meshing like it should. Initially I suspected, was hoping, a brake problem. Possible the bar between the shoes for the E-brake. I had a really worn set over expand and this fell out and made a hell of a noise banging off the axle inside the drum.
Could this be the cause of the noise? It's a 3.55 limited slip. Axle code 3L55885A-09. Let me know ASAP if you can. He's at Camp Lejeune, I'm in Erie PA and if this is the problem I'll need to find one tomorrow and get on the road to replace it this weekend. Thank's!
Broken parts inside the diff are always a problem, at the very least the diff should be dismantled and all damaged parts replaced, anything short of that is just asking for bigger problems. It's a good idea to pull the brake drums and have a look there too, you never know.. the source of the noise could be just what you said above and the stuff in the diff could be inconsequential.
the limited slip is eating itself. either rebuild the Limited slip or replace it with a detroit tru-trac limited slip. the first option is cheaper of course.
since it has an LS in the back a special friction modifier additive must be added to the gear oil in the rear diff. if its not then the LS will fail again causing lots of damage
