Priming low pressure oil system after base engine work

I would like to prime the low pressure oil system after base engine work before the first test run.

Where would you feed the oil with a pump? At the test port on the oil cooler housing or at the pressure regulator (I would build an adapter)?
Thanks

How about putting a threaded port in the middle (top) of the oil filter cap (or buying one that comes that way for a gauge)? Pump in the oil there.

Would it be bad to just crank the engine without fuel until the filter bowl fills up? Can't really pull the distributor and spin the oil pump with a drill motor.

On racecars we tee into an oil line and run a pressure accumulator. I imagine something could be rigged up with a pressurized oil source.

I want to check whether oil reaches various lubrication points with the engine partially open. I build up the pressure with a pump. The question is where I connect the “external oil source”

I have made this adapter with the connection for the oil pump. The initial idea was to pump the oil through the engine in the direction of flow. But I will probably pump more oil into the oil pan connected to the pressure regulator housing (pressure regulator removed) than in the direction of flow through the engine.

So I will probably stay with the oil cooler test port as the connection for the pump.

Did you not like the idea of going into the filter housing? It will go into the engine per the normal flow path, and there is a check valve to keep it from flowing in reverse.

I was going to do either the port or the filter. In the end, I loaded all passages with oil as I was assembling. I did install the aluminum filter cap and then filled the filter housing through the 1/8" NPT port.

Hi, Mark. Of course, priming is done almost without pressure. However, to be on the safe side, I have attached a pressure gauge to my modified oil filter housing cap to monitor whether pressure builds up, which is the reason why I do not pump through the filter cap.

I knew there had to be a reason!

In my house and lawn plumbing, I tend to put in a lot of tees and valves. Obviously you know that you could install the gauge on a "tee" just for the priming, and return to normal afterwards, but I l look forward to what you decide to do. I am sure it will be first class like all the other things you do, Nice forum thread also.

Hope all is well with you!!

When I pre oil an engine, I T into the oil pressure gage port. On the 6.0 it's on top of the oil cooler cover. The test port on the front or the filter cover would work just as well.
