2002 V-10 Head Replacement Due to Ejected Plug

Hi all. I have a 2002 Excursion (I know... this is the Super Duty forum, not the Excursion forum. However, this is an engine question, not particular to Excursions, and my assumption is the population of possible respondents is much larger) that has ejected the number 3 plug a second time. I've had the vehicle 10+ years, and this is the 4th time it's happened with me (number 3 once and number 4 three times) and it had 2 inserts when I bought it (3 and 7).

Each time it happened on number 4, I just went with a larger insert. But the plug that just blew out of 3 already had the largest insert. I think it's time for a new head. (Side note: a lot of folks have asked how long you can drive this way. I had one blow on a long trip 4 years ago, and we just kept going. I drove over a thousand miles with it gone).

Anyway, I've been looking at replacement heads from cylinder-heads.com ($850), heavydutypartscompany.com ($920), bishopenginereplacementparts.com ($649), and atkvege.com.

1. Has anyone bought a head from any of them? Opinions?

2. I saw on another older thread here that someone said they just used QuikSteel and shoved it back in. Was that a joke? Has anyone really done that?

3. Several threads here identify the 4-thread heads as starting with YC2E and the 8-thread 2 valve as starting with 1C2Z, and later 9C2Z or 2C2Z. Each one of the sites that sell these ask for the core back. Does that mean if I buy one of their reman heads, it might be the same junk I already have?

4. And lastly, should I be concerned at all that I plan to only replace the passenger side?

Many thanks in advance for the responses.

A machine shop may be able to repair the threads with the head removed. If it cannot be repaired, the core likely won't be accepted by the manufacturer. You may be able to contact them and ask specifically for the later style threads. Depending on miles, you could create an imbalance between the two banks of cylinders; one side making more power than the other. Could lead to problems longer term. If high mileage, I'd consider at least refreshing the other head. Valve job, seals, etc. once one head is off, it's not a lot more work to remove the other. Pay once, cry once...
