Spark Plug Blowout

I just had a plug blow out on my 2002 Explorer with a 4.6L. It stripped the threads out of the head. In looking on line I have seen a number of people talking about the same issue occurring above 100k miles. They did a temporary fix on the Can the heads be reworked or will I have to get replace the entire head to eliminate this problem? Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

It can be repaired using a heli-coil that doesn't require head removal. It's a thread replacement device inserted into existing head.

Thanks for the info, Is this a common problem and should I have my heads reworked to prevent having the problem occur while on the road?

I didn't think it was all that common on a 4.6, mostly 5.4 and early v10. How many miles? Have plugs been replaced?

Usually the spark plug blowout was the result of overtightening the plugs when this happens on the 4.6L. The problem was more common on the 5.4L. But it has been known to happen otherwise as well.

The helicoils are not the correct approach, a solid insert is much better, like this one.
++ TIME-SERT Threaded inserts for stripped threads, threaded inserts, thread repair stripped sparkplug's, Ford sparkplug blowouts, threaded inserts threaded, repair stripped threads, stripped threads, inserts threaded inserts, Ford spark plug repair,
The Helicoils are a spring that gets inserted, but because of their design, the new hole cannot be fully loaded, and gases can force their way through the threads, resulting in slightly decreased compression. The helicoils can come out whenever the plugs are removed. I have used both, and the Timeserts are much easier to install, and far more durable. You could replace them all if you want to be sure the blowout doesn't happen again on any of the other cylinders.

No the heads do not need to be removed or reworked. Again to answer your question, this is not a common problem on the 4.6L.

It can also happen on the 3.0 used in the Escape. Helicoils are an effective and inexpensive repair.
