long thread head question

i recently had a spark plug problem, one loosened up and left the head... i got it back in and tq'd everything seems fine. my question is if my truck came with the full thread plugs (which is what i removed and then put new ones in) like this

on the right.

does that mean my 2002 v10 has the long thread heads from the factory ? i'm just trying to think logically here

What is the exact manufacture date of your truck (from the door sticker) ???

Late model-year 2002, long thread heads.

Where did the short-thread plug come from?

Any replacement plugs are now "long thread"...

i'll look when i goto lunch for the manufacture date of my truck. IIRC it was late 2001. i guess it could be possible the heads were changed under warranty (this truck had extended warranty until june 2007 or 83000 miles)

i was searching on the forum and found that pic and posted it again. i just posted it for reference sake. i bought the truck @ 62k miles and am 99% sure the plugs are original. a few plugs were nice and rusted and crudded up.

The long plug means nothing about how many threads there are in the head. They used the short plug until 2000 and then went to the longer plug, but the taper is still in the same position on the plug and they just left the space between the taper and the five threads in the head empty with no threads. Great engineering if you want to go broke.
I don't believe that it was until the end of 2002 that they put more threads in the head. I have a 2002 April V10 and it has short threads.
No one has varified the longer threads and neither will Ford.
Keep them torqued to more than 14lbs for sure, or check them every 30k for loose ones.
If your plug blew out there is a good chance it will do it again. Timesert is the way to go and have had great success with their insert. No helicoils, they will mess it up. Timesert insert is the way to go.
Andrew.

After the research I did on torque I settled in on 20 ft pounds (240 inch pounds) with anti seize. There are a lot of opinions and the lower Ford torque spec seems to be part of the problem and not part of the solution. Also, the platinum plugs may be good for 100,000 miles but it is a big mistake to let them corode that long without antiseize. Best advice I think I got was to pull them every 25,000 miles for inspection.

I personally have not had one blow out but I know people that have. They all had them fixed by a Blownoutsparkplug.com. They have their own style of inserts that I have not seen anywhere else. They came out and did everything right here including changing all of the other plugs and checking the treads. They even guaranty their repair. I would contact them. Their site is http://www.blownoutsparkplug.com
