Vibration under load at 30mph+

I'm posting this because I have searched the net trying to get a resolved thread on the subject. This issue had me thinking I could have an injector problems.

Hopefully I've found my issue. The problem was a vibration throughout the truck at speeds above 30ish. Mostly in the steering. The vibration would ALMOST disappear when I let off the throttle. It seemed to start at around 30mph and was worse at a cruising speed. Vibration would speed up with the rpms.

Today I got under the truck to remove the drive shaft so I could mark it of the list and found that a cup was busted on a unjoint. Still hoping this is the root of the problem. Definitely a good candidate.

I'd bet the farm on that being the culprit.

Yep! I would replace them all, as well as really check your carrier bearing.

Do yourself a favor and install serviceable u-joints.

Some say sealed are stronger but I have read different and the ability to lube the u-joint (and based on your rust) is longevity for your driveline. IMO

I had the parts store order the rear section of the drive shaft.
Precision Driveline PN: N95463 (shaft was short, NOT THE CORRECT REPLACEMENT)
I'm not sure how I feel about the extra u joint on that unit but might as well give it a go.

+2 on the carrier bearing.

Perhaps the 2nd u-joint makes the ride smoother?

Please do follow-up with a review.

The description on O'Reilly's website says it's application is for the front.

I seen that. Look at the ends of that shaft and compare to the ones described as front.

I had that exact problem, I replaced the u-joints and carrier bearing and the vibration went away.

I did the carrier bearing several years ago as well as the u joint on the back side of the transmission. Bearing is still tight without play. I used unserviceable Spicer joint. The previous owner installed a lift kit without a shim for the carrier bearing. I was getting a small vibration back then but wasn't bad enough to address really but I gave it a shot anyway. That's when added a shim, replaced the bearing and the front u joint. I had such a hard time with the other joints so I said the hell with it. I installed it as it was. Been fine for years. I reckon that joint must have been the problem the whole time.

Funny with these trucks they are so heavy it's hard to tell if you have a problem like a stuck caliper. They only thing that let me know I had that problem was the horrible smell of a burning brake pad. The brake could drag like crazy and you'd never know it. I assume that u joint was trying to give up along time ago.

I'll have to source the drive shaft elsewhere. The precision Driveline is about 3 or 4 inches short at max

How about just using your driveline? If you can't swap them yourself, take it to a driveline place and they will do the entire assembly and BALANCE it.

Your best bet and probably the same price.

Make sure they use USA components

On the rear section of the drive shaft I had the local machine shop balance and install new joints. Wow! I should have taken care of this along time ago.

I've always had this "stutter" on take off. Just a short vibration. It's gone. The u joints must have been bad for years. The ol' truck now rides like papaws 79 Lincoln.

Sum of the thread, first sign was a short stutter on take off with come and go vibrations at interstate speeds. Took a near complete failure of a drive shaft u joint to cause a rumble strip feel from 30ish mph on up. The vibration would speed up with rmps and would go away when I let off the throttle.

New u joints and a balance of the rear section of the drive shaft fixed this problem. Hope this helps someone.

I couldn't tell the joints where bad visually and i don't recall a clunk or anything similar. Vibration under certain conditions only.

Always had that little rumble on take off. For 50k+ miles. I gave up trying to figure it out and put the blame the transmission. Been waiting for it to completely crap the bed for many years. Little rumble is gone and I don't think I'll miss it.

Wear troughs can develop on the trunnions, which don't necessarily show up when you wiggle a driveshaft by hand to look for excessive wear. That can be more noticeable at lower rpms. I still have my OE u-joints on my truck of over 200k, but I'm sure those are worn like this picture.
