I have a light tapping/knocking sound on the driver's side of the engine it is coming from upper area. I can't hear it when I'm in the vehicle when I accelerate in park it goes away. I had someone tell me that expedition are notorious for cam roller followers to fail. Everything I look up said that is only in the 3 valve 5.4l with mine being a 2 valve has anyone else dealt with this. I checked for codes it doesn't have anything other than a 02 sensor voltage malfunction. It runs fine no miss it only has a 174,000 miles and oil change has always been regular change
A 5.4L engine experiencing piston slap at idle, often a ticking or knocking sound, can be caused by excessive piston-to-wall clearance, especially when the engine is cold. This can be considered normal, albeit annoying.
---------------------------
Symptoms:
Ticking or knocking sound: The most noticeable symptom, often heard at idle, especially when the engine is cold.
Sound may diminish with warm-up: As the engine warms up and the oil thins, the noise might become less noticeable.
