rattle/pinging sound
I have a 97 Expedition 50k miles
when it hits 65-70 mph. I get this annoying clinking sound.
defenetly mechanical prob.
Thought it might be octane,Got same results after using octane booster.
Any ideas what might be causing it?

rattle/pinging sound
I have a 2000 expedition with 18k and have been experiencing somewhat of a similar problem. When my engine is cold it makes a hollow knocking sound and gets louder as I accerlate. The colder it is outside the worse the noise is. This noise will totally go away after about 2 minutes. However, my engine alway's makes a high pitched ringing sound under heavy accerlation. I too have tried premium gas but it makes no difference. I am convinced that my engine has too much clearance between one of the pistons and its cylinder. I would suspect a worn ring if it weren't for the fact that this engine burns no oil and runs perfectly smooth. I am taking it to the dealer within a couple of days for this and a couple of other minor problems. If the dealer actually corrects this noise I will post it on the message board.
