Sometimes I try to start my engine when I am stopped because I can't hear it. At cruise it is one of the quietest engines I have ever had. You must have a hole in something or the engine quiet insulation is working.

Hi, My engine sounds smooth and does ping occasionally under loads. If I know that I am going over the mountains or on a long trip I run med grade gas. Hope this helps.
No, no ticking or sounding like a small diesel. I would get it looked onto if It were making sounds like a diesel. The ticking might be something cooling down like a heat shroud. Any power loss or overrunning?
I have an '03 Eddie Bauer 5.4 4x2 and my engine is very quiet, idling and cruising. However, during the summer months, this is the third summer I have gone through with my Expy and it has done it every summer, the a/c makes a ticking noise that is kindly loud but I am not concerned about it at all b/c my friend's '04 4.6 XLT makes that exact same noise. If you turn off the a/c, the noise disappears on both of our Expys, so it's definitely the a/c. One more thing that makes me feel better is the fact that when I test drove an '04 Navigator, guess what, I heard the same noise. However, my doctor's wife's '03 EB Expy 5.4 doesn't make the tick, but her a/c doesn't blow cold all the time, it blows warm air at times like many people have been complaining about in their '03-'04 Expys, mine and my friend's a/c both blow ice cold air, even on these humid days in south Georgia (we're 8 miles from Florida and only 1 1/2 hrs from Panama City Beach, Florida so it gets very very hot here, therefore our a/c's have been put through the test and have passed each time). Anyways, what I am getting at is that many new Expeditions, not just yours, make the ticking noise with the a/c turned on, however if the ticking doesn't go away when the a/c is turned off then I don't know what it could be but mine goes away when I disengage the a/c. Also, if your a/c works well and has the tick, I wouldn't worry about it b/c like I said, my doctor's wife's Expy doesn't make the ticking noise but her a/c doesn't work well either, so. But other than the ticking noise, my engine is very quiet and sounds great and powerful, no unusual pinging or any other noises that would be cause for concern. Just a little food for thought for you guys, I read in the FORD magazine that the newly redesigned 5.4 engine that came out in the '03 was engineered to be very quiet during regular driving but when it was pressed to get-up-and-go it was engineered to have more of a performance and powerful sound. Cool huh?
