New to the forum. I have a 1955 F100 and trying to get it road worthy. Currently have slop in the shift column at the top. I would think there is a bushing that the column glides inside of while shifting gears, yes? With the shift arm in hand, I can move it in almost in any direction about 3/8 of an inch. I have tried to adjust the shift length or its position from at the steering box to no success? My next stp is to remove the turn signal switch but before doing so, Do any of you know what can be the cause of the slop? Thanks in advance with picture attached. - Robert 3spd column slop?
In looking at photos online, I see there is a rod support riveted to the steering bell housing (photo attached - not mine). If it's the same on 1955 F100's then mine has become free and moves in any direction. I guess I need to remove my turn signal switch to validate. If it has broken rivets, I assume I can drill them and refasten with appropriate hardware, yes? If the support itself has broken can I replace it or do I need the entire column tube?
Thoughts?
In looking at the diagram I shared earlier, it seems as if Ford cataloged it as a whole outer tube assembly, TAAA-3509-A. Your best bet is to give Chuck of Chucks Trucks LLC a call and see what he has in his serviceable inventory. He sometimes is willing/able to get more granular than the Ford catalog
I had a similar problem on my 54. I took it to my buddy Morry, now deceased, who some of you met at Truckstock. I took the wheel off and one side of the little brace thing had torn away from
the rivet.
Morry went out to his "junkyard" and found a column with that piece intact. He gave me 2 little bolts and nuts and I bolted the piece into the "bell" or cup of the column.
I remember have the torn piece somewhere at my workbench. I am not sure why I saved it. Tonight I couldn't find it I'll probably find it next week.
But here is a pic of the backside of the bell with the 2 nuts and bolts.
Abe,
Thank you for the photo (love the head-liner and light assembly). Was going to remove my turn signal switch this weekend and validate that my shift rod support is usable and if reattaching it even an option.
A big thank-you to everyone that has replied and offered their suggestions.
