4R70W transmission I'm working on a transmission issue & started to reassemble everything. I've had the battery disconnected for this whole project. Now I need to put the truck in N to realign the transmission range TR sensor & put it in Drive to realign & lock the shift link cable back to its control arm. I thought I would be able to put the key in & turn it to On, press the brake, and then then put the shift lever into any respective gear. It won't let me get all the way to R.
I think this is a Shift Lock issue but I can't seem to locate any bypass or release button / slot in my truck.. Do I need to reconnect the battery to get access to N & D?
Is it a little black button on the column you press while holding the key? Or maybe an access hole you put a pick into? Just guessing so maybe someone who has the truck sees the answer and gives you the correct one if I'm wrong.

Nope. I tore off the column housing & didn't see any switches or slots. I just found the procedure. Foot on brake, move key from LOCK to OFF position and then shift gears....I can get it to R and then there's a wall.
Update: my shift lever was still stuck in Park. After a process of elimination I figured out that the problem is tied to my ignition. With my key in the ignition and putting downward pressure on the lever when I start rotating the key all of a sudden the shift lever drops down and has full range throughout all the gears again
My Haynes manual doesn't even list the ignition as playing a role in the shift lever movement I was running out of ideas and thought I would run this against ChatGPT. The AI came back with a couple of suggestions & 1 of them was right!
Before I put everything back together in the steering column, I'm trying to understand what is failing. Is this just an ignition module that needs to be replaced or is there something electronic or mechanical elsewhere that is potentially the problem. Any ideas?
Thank you!

Is there some reason you can't connect the battery and then shift it out of park?
Not sure why the 2003 is different than my '98 but it is. I just found the steps, put foot on Brake & rotate key from the LOCK to OFF position & then gears should shift.
I have the shift cable disconnected underneath but have the Transmission Range sensor back in place & aligned. I need to get the truck into D to reattach the cable (not sure why as it was in Park when I disconnected the shift cable & it's arm from the shaft that goes into the transmission - and yet while it's still in Park, I cannot get the shift cable arm back onto the shaft because it's needs a bit more cable, even with the cable clip position moved all the way out). Anyway, now I'm trying to get it into D but when I go through tge steps I can only get shift lever into R before it hits a wall.
I'm not sure what the hell happened or how to continue.
