cracked timing cover

i have a 97 2wd 4.2l with 56000 miles.. the other day i started it and heard a loud clanking noise.all fluids was full. there was no warning at all.the ford dealership told me my timing chain cover cracked and threw a rod.i kept up with general maintence. what would cause this to happen? anybody?
