///// Problem with e4od shifting /////
I've been having some trouble with my transmission shifting funny and delayed shifting Etc
When I say funny shifting I can be driving along and the RPMs will get up to 2500 RPMs before it even shift .... And then sometimes when you're driving along at speed it'll just downshift into a low gear for no reason sometimes pushing the RPMs all the way up to 3,000 or so
Anyways somehow something with a sensor is acting up so I replaced the vehicle speed sensor that's on top of the transfer case where the speedometer cable plugs into
I might have actually changed the sensor on the differential also a while back
The speedometer cable is free because I bought a new one and made sure I use dry graphite lube on it and it turns freely
One thing to note though is the speedometer stopped working it made a bunch of noise it used to dance around but something must have broken in it so it's all together not working at this current time
Also today when I was replacing the sensor on the transfer case again thinking maybe I bought a defective one I noticed the gear might be a little worn could that be a problem?
Anyways here's a picture of the gear as best I could take a picture of ... It looks like it may have a little wear to it because it's not perfectly straight across the tops of the gear teeth so maybe that's what's causing it to skip and have all kinds of horrible shifting going on?
If I replace this plastic gear (and come to think of it where would I get such a gear?) do you think that would take care of my problems? ....
I'm hoping so anyways I'll attach a picture or pictures here if I can
Thanks

I would say the answer to your question would be; that would be a very strong probability.
Is it a 1990 or a 1994?
Have you checked the codes?
Your problem is the speedo that is not currently working
That speed signal goes from one module to another then the next module etc. your signal is missing and that's the shift issue
You need a service manual and an EVTM, then you can go over the circuit
If you had access to a NGS you might have an easier go of it
That's what the service manual is going to want you to have and use (a NGS) scan tool

My truck is a 1990 Ford f250 4x4 .
I do have a scan tool like I could use pic
What is an evtm and ngs ? I'm not familiar with those terms
Also just curious and I never seem to fully understand it but is the rear sensor on the differential is that a speed sensor also or is that strictly for the abs? My understanding is the sensor on the transmission or transfer case is the actual speed sensor that the transmission uses to figure out what gear should be in and the one on the differential is strictly for abs or is that not correct?
I suppose I could get the speedometer fixed I would have to take out the cluster and take it to Richmond there's a shop there that fixes the speedometers for I think $300
I had no idea the actual speedometer needed to be working because I was almost tempted to take the cable off thinking maybe that was binding up we're offering too much resistance and somehow messing with the speed reading but from the sound of it it looks like I'll have to get the speedometer fixed also which I don't mind because I would like to know how fast I'm going other than having to rely on my cell phone GPS
Thanks
As for your speedo, have you tried spinning the cable end to see if the speedo needle moves, if it does then the gear inside the trans/t-case is stripped.. if it doesn't the speedo is the problem.

That's why I asked what year
Still, I am not sure without checking a book and a schematic
I do have a 1990 EVTM and can post a pic later
I'm with Conanski on this one
Check that gear inside the T case
Back in the day, guys would disconnect the speedo and the trans would "hunt" for shift because the speed sensor signal was gone
The guys would be trying to have 3/36 arrive at the same time for warranty and would drive around for half a year with the speedo disconnected
I did the same
We did it constantly on the poor rental cars when we borrowed them ourselves
Fun stuff
Those days are over
Getting harder and harder to bull**** a speedo / odo these days
