1980 bronco Speedometer stopped working. It bounce around for a few days but still worked and then it stopped moving altogether. I pulled the cable off of the transfer case and spun it with a drill and the needle moved. It looks to me like the plastic gear on the cable is ok but maybe the inner gear is stripped? Can you guys tell from my picture? What's my next step? Thanks!
Sounds like you are certain that everything is fine form the cable to the gauge. Have you considered investigating whether or not the internal gear in the t-case is still doing its job? I realize this could be a bit involved but pick the rear axle up and secure the truck or better yet, disconnect the rear driveshaft, put her in gear and observe whilst taking precautions not to lose too much gear oil. Might need a friend to observe or one you trust in the driver's seat while you do the observing.
Interesting, so that will show me if the gear is spinning, got it. Thanks! I don't really know what I'm looking at here but from the pictures I took I "think" the blue inner gear might be missing a couple of teeth. Can you tell?
My 80s speedometer is also getting flaky. I have an intermediate cruise control joint (you may too) and I suspect the problem is there as I’ve already had to source a JY replacement. Both cables are newer. Just having a hard time caring enough about it to chase it. Truck probably can’t top 65 anyway, and in Texas that’s about school zone speed.
Ya know, now the you mention it, those nylon threads could be a lil' worn or even stripped. The gear sets are available to replace worn out units. JBG sells them if you can't source them locally of through your AFD.
