Has anyone altered a 4406 to accept a speedometer gear and tailhousing? Seems easy enough. Just drill a little divot for the ball bearing retainer in the right spot. I think the donor is a 2002. The broke one is a 1998. Both expeditions. I posted on that forum but no replies. Please let me know what you think. The gear in the pic is on the newer one.
Drilled it out 180 degrees from the existing retainer hole. The shaft was real hard. My center punch barely chipped it. It took a while but got it drilled with a altered masonry bit. I'll have to use the retainer from the 98 as well. I could probably use the newer retainer and snap the extra tab off of it if I didnt have the donor.
I left the speedo gear, tone ring and tail housing off to make it easy to get back on. I will get a new bushing and seal for the tailhouse too.

Cool, I was following this to see if you'd have trouble drilling that hardened shaft.
That took me a hour to get a good chisel point on that drill. After I got the angles right it drilled pretty good. I heard of doing that before but a u tube video sold me on trying it. I used a little rechargeable hammer drill at first then put it in the regular electric drill for most of the depth.
