i've got a '77 f-100 302 with, i'm 95% sure, a dana 44 rear end. it started leaking gear oil pretty bad and macking a whirring sound for the past few weeks. i've done a little research and came up that it's probably the pinion seal. i'm pretty mechanical and do all my repairs myself, but rearends are uncharterd waters. i'm leaning going with a quality used one (if i can find one for a few hundred bucks or less). i have to do some work on a rear brake drum anyway. i can put a new rearend on, but i don't know if i wanna crack one open and have to deal with the gears and stuff. anyway i've been putting it off for a while, but the other day i was going down highway when i heard a nasty pop from that area. it started driving real bad and when i put it in reverse it pop every few feet.
anyway, i'm just tryin to get an idea on options. if it is a 44, could i put a 9" instead, should i try to find another 44, which is the better rearend, and whats cost relation? or maybe some suggestions. thanks
Dana 44 was not used on very many trucks and might be hard to find. A 9" will bolt in with possible driveshaft modifications. 73-86 F100/F150, 78-86 Bronco axle will fit but some 80-82 F100 have different lug bolt pattern. Junkyard axle should cost about $125.
thanks a ton. that really helps me in my search. iwas wondering how long and in what models ford used the same setup.
what would be the possible driveshaft modifications? something i could do or something that would have to be shopped, like involving expensive machinery.
You might have to make the driveshaft longer/shorter or change u-joint size. I have built my own driveshafts without problems but it should be done in a shop with the proper equipment.
