I have a '94 150 4x4 300-6, it's a 5 spd and my trans is having trouble with the gears. It takes about 10 min to find 1st first gear, 2nd gear ginds sometimes and also with 3rd, 4th and 5th seem to be ok. I have been using 2nd to start from and gettin sick of it. When going from 2nd to 3rd you have to shake the stick around a little to find 3rd. There is also a lot of play in the shifter when in gear both vertical and horizontal. I think the trans is a top loader. Any help would be greatful!
Clutch is fine other than the fact I have to ride it to get the thing moving (2nd gear). What type of fluid dexron atf? I know the front uni's need to be changed, but I only notice that when wheelin'. How do I find out the trans?
I found the 94's had a ZF transmission, which is the tougher of the tow transmissions. The M5OD is victorious about loosing the syncos and poping out of gear. Your transmission takes mercon atf. mercon 3 would probably do, but mercon 5 would not hert anything. With the first gear thing, does it slide in, and no do anything, or does it just not go in? The fluid change should help the shifting, but i do not know about 1st gear. You might have to take the top cover off the tranny, to findout what is going on there. I had a simular problem on a 78 F-250. When i first got it, the tranny was bone dry, and i did not know it. So i drove it, and i could not shift into 3rd or 4th, they would always grind, then i changed the fluid, now it shifts like a dream.
I will check tommorow on the trans, as for the first gear I could reef on it as hard as I can and it just won't go in. Could it possibly be somthing inthe linkage or where the end of the shifter stick meets the trans (it is a top loader) possibly there is a bearing in there that has failed? When I find out the trans in my book, I will definetly change the fluid.
