Scary Cruise Control Behavior

I drove the new truck skiing today, and had some scary adaptive cruise control malfunction behavior.

- I was on the freeway in a winding canyon with the cruise set at 55. All of a sudden, the truck accelerated hard. I looked down, the speed setting had changed itself to 80 all by itself. I cancelled the cruise and reset it thinking it was just a burp.
- On an expressway a little while later, I had it set on 65, speed limit 65, and it jumped to 80 again. This time, I had my phone ready, and got a pic of the display showing the 80 setting after it was cancelled.
- In my neighborhood, I had it set a 25mph, and all of a sudden it switched itself to 50, and then dropped to 40 before I could cancel it. Got a pic of that too.

I have my settings set to ignore speed limits. Oh, yeah, a couple of times on my heads up display, the "line bars" both turned amber, and a message appeared at the top of the field, "*something* Cancelled". I didn't catch the first word, it was just a flash.

This sucks hard, is it a button membrane sticking, RF interference messing up a processor, what? It's the kind of bug that a dealer just won't be able to diagnose. I can't stand the thought of the service dept blindly experimenting with it. Ugh....

There are settings to make your cruise more…. Adaptive. I turned them off for the same reason.

there’s a setting for how much over the speed limit you like to go, it will automatically slow down around curves, etc. I only wanted radar cruise, so I turned that stuff off. Sometimes I only want to go a few over, this would keep putting you to whatever you set your preferences for. If you set it lower, and you go out and put your cruise to something higher, once it sees a speed sign, it’ll slow you down. It’s really annoying.

I’m guessing that’s what’s happening in your case. I think you can find the settings under features, or the settings menu. It sounds like you found those settings, but something must be wacky or something.

My lane keep cancels frequently also. Not sure why it shuts down ( Line bars on two sides in the Hud)

I've got to believe this is more associated with the camera being able to see/read the road striping to know where the lanes are. It always seems to turn back on a few minutes later

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already turned off the settings mentioned.

Here are pics of the HUD, this is after I cancelled the cruise, as the truck as accelerating to its new self-set speed.

Cruise was set to 65, then jumped to 80.

Cruise was set to 25, then jumped to 50, but dropped to 40 in the amount of time it took to click the pic.

OK y'all, if you see news articles about me getting killed in a run away truck, you saw the problem here first!

Looks like the image shows speed limit 65. Are you possibly on or near a route 65? I have had the truck pickup route signs that end in zero or five as the speed limit.

I would also double check your setting to adjust for current speed, looks like it is still on even though you think it is off. I have never used this not sure what to look for.

No, it's a local expressway (not interstate). The speed limit was 65. My truck does see and recognize speed limit signs, when it spots one the little speed limit sign graphic momentarily changes to white. The 63 actual speed is what if drifted down to after I cancelled the cruise and aimed my phone.

I know what the speed limit based cruise settings are base on, that was originally enabled. I disabled it because on a 65 freeway, with everyone including me going 75, when it would see a sign, the truck would brake to slow to 65!

The three events weren't all on the same key cycle, I had a stop at the bike shop between the 80 and 40 malfunctions.

That's a very valid question. I was testing to see if the problem was somehow speed dependent. Note the time and temperature, nobody was outside. I am ultra conservative driving in the 'hood, especially in my Chevelle. My neighbors know that, I went to the city council and got another stop sign put in at one intersection to control the flow.

Any chance you’re hitting the cruise increase buttons by mistake when trying to hit the volume buttons on your steering wheel? I know when you press and hold the cruise increase/decrease buttons, it changes in increments of 5 MPH.

I use my ACC all the time on the highway without the auto speed adjust on and I’ve never had it change my set speed on me without my input. But I have in fact hit the cruise increase/decrease buttons mistakenly on multiple occasions when meaning to use my menu scroll buttons or volume controls.

And the orange lines you see on the side of your HUD with ACC on and the message that says cancel, that’s just your lane centering temporarily turning off because your truck can’t pick up the lane lines. It turns back on once it is able to identify the lines again.

Thanks everyone for trying to help! I sincerely appreciate it.

I can testify that it's definitely not mistaking the volume buttons. My wife has headache chronic pain, we do not use the stereo because it's a trigger. Bummer, before the onset of her issues, I used to build really nice sound systems in our cars and we would rock out on the road.

Ah-ha (D'oh) moment on the orange message, it happened where the road led onto a freeway on-ramp, with a cattle guard at the rolling entrance, and another road T-boning in slightly before. Heck that would freak any software out. I will take that one off my list.

you need to take it in
that is not normal
especially if you turned off sign recognition
HOWEVER my steering wheel switch on the menu side seems to be delayed in its selection
maybe yours is overly sensiitve

either way...have them look at it

Love ACC and try to use it whenever practical. In my normal travels there is one section of freeway where the exit speed limit sign is positioned such that I have to be in the extreme left lane going by or the beast will reset to ramp speed and surprise me… or I just don’t turn on cruise until past there. Sometimes a nearby semi in the right lane just ahead will block enough… so it fooled me at first.

For lower stress testing - take a buddy safety pilot with you so you can have one set of eyes always down range, then try all kinds of stuff.

Is this easily replicated? Will you be able to demonstrate this for them? Dealers love to not be able to find problems.

This seems like something we would hear a lot about and would almost certainly trigger a safety recall if there was some inherent flaw. The fact that it seems to be reacting to speed limit signs really points to those settings, but if they’re off… there’s a problem. If it’s me, I would triple check to see if there’s not an additional setting that could have been missed before you bring it in. I hate dealing with dealerships though, so maybe that’s just me.

Having just glanced at my truck, there are at least two similar but different settings. You need to make sure predictive speed assist is off in driver assistance settings. Speed limit assist just alerts you of the speed change.

I like adaptive cruise, but you could also try to turn that off and it should work normally until you can get it fixed if it’s not a setting.

Yep, predictive is off and speed limit assist is off. The events weren't coincidental with speed limit signs, I was just noting that the truck can see them.

I emailed the pics to my dealer's service manager, he was quite interested. But didn't say bring it in. Yet. I'm going to keep fooling around with it to see if there's any pattern to what triggers it. Ready to hit the cancel button!

Last Idea I have is a defective clock spring. Could be triggering the button... It would still do this if you had adaptive off, and would likely be exasperated by moving the steering wheel to/past a certain spot. Might be near centered where the problem could be.

Or, maybe something completely different.
