I am going to change my manual transmission fluid tomorrow. I have heard to use 80W/90 gear oil (which seems to be the general fluid used), also I have heard 50W. I am more inclined to go with the 80W/90 but don't want to fill with improper fluid. Being in Southern California, I experience hot temperatures instead of freezing temperatures if that has anything to do with it.
Also if I drain and refill, how much fluid should I plan on purchasing? My understanding is to pull the plug, let it drain, then re install plug. Then fill till it come out of the top fill plug area.
All suggestions (including brand of oil) are welcome.
Sounds like a good plan. IMHO, since you are in a hot climate overal, I'd pick the thicker lube. I've even run 75w140 in my truck, but makes it pretty stiff in the winter time.
I would bet a gallon jug would suffice. Not sure of exact amount needed. The hard part is getting it in the tranny. If you want, purchase one of the grease pumps that screws onto the lid of gallon jug. Much easier then trying to pour it in the side. I used to buy the Qt jugs and then you can fold them over as you squeeze them and get it in the hole(and not wear much of it LOL!)
Ford recommends 85-90 wt. Gear Oil in the 3 speed transmissions in the trucks from the 1970's. The recommendation for 4 speed transmissions and 4 wheel drive transfer cases is for SAE 30 Engine oil for constant operations below 10 degrees F. Constant operation above 10 degrees F recommends SAE 50 engine oil. There is absolutely no mention of using 85-90 or 85-140 or any other gear lube in the 4 speed transmissions. Both the Warner T-18 and the New Process 435 have a Refill Capacity of 6 - 1/2 pints which is 3 - 1/4 quarts of oil. Looks like 4 qts. will do it!
Which Oil to use? If it were me, I would probably replace it with what it has in it already. You can easily smell the difference between Gear Lube Oil and Engine oil. I would let my nose tell me what to use.......

Thanks for the info. The 85W/90 gear oil bottle says for use in manual transmissions. I bought it but haven't put it in. The issue with replacing what's in it no, is I bet it's a mix! I know there is ATF in there since I have seen it on the drain plug. I am running a 4-speed and would never be in 10 below weather, heck I'd be lucky to see 25 degrees!
