2004 F350 acceleration problem

Hello everyone,

Today I bought a 2004 F350 6.0 with only 50k miles on it from an auction. This is my first 6.0 while I have only had 7.3s in the past.

I have an issue that I can’t seem to solve after spending all day googling and searching forums.

Details of the issue:

Driving the truck home it would accelerate to 10 MPH and remain at about 2,000 RPM.

When I backed down to 1,000 RPM I could then go to 20 MPH at 2,000 RPM and repeat this until I reached 50 mph at 2,000 RPM.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea ideas what might be causing this? There are no lights on the dashes and it is not throwing any codes.

Some answers I saw were the ICP or VGT sensor but the issues seemed to be related to acceleration but different symptoms.

Also, this truck has sat for five years. I am in the process of doing an oil change, new fuel filter filters and a new engine air filter. I did use fresh fuel and I installed new batteries before starting the truck.

What are you using to check for codes?

Just an fyi - FORScan does better with diesel codes, especially transmission codes.

The 3100 is one of their early scan tools also (around 2000).

That’s actually a very good point I’m going to see if I can borrow one from a friend and I will report the results.

In the worst case, I might have to take it to the dealer.

I have used a few Innova scan tools and they did not read what FORScan did. That said, I did not pay attention to the model numbers.

FORScan is a free download, but you do need an OBDII adapter. Depending on the device you want to load FORSan onto, the adapter can be very inexpensive to a "moderate" cost.

If you want to be a long term 6.0L owner, FORScan is very helpful. The full version on a windows laptop has the most features available (it can command actuators). The Lite version on an i-phone is fairly capable. The full version download is free, and the Lite version download is VERY cheap.

I truly think scanning for codes with a scan tool (one that is certain to grab everything) is your best bet.

Thank you for the information. I did not realize does a was free. I thought it required an expensive license. I am going to look into it tonight.

Forscan is something I definitely need. I have several Ford trucks. This is just my first 6.0. I also have several Cummins trucks as well….

if I get anywhere with the forscan, I will share my results

They will give you an option for a license, but you do not need it.

I ordered an adapter off of Amazon and it should be here tomorrow.

I did go out and do another scan with a launch X431 scan tool and it did not report any codes. I mainly just wanted to give it a shot to see if there was any difference.

I did notice some symptoms that I didn’t pick up on earlier.

1. The truck started and seemed to idle low, and then it eventually came to a higher idle. (I’m not sure if this is normal for these trucks in the cold)
2. The interior cab light seemed to be surging.

it is 20° here now and with the windchill it feels like 10. I also don’t want to run the truck longer than I have to without having all of the fluids and filters changed.

I’m back with more information.

So far today, I changed both fuel filters and the oil.

I have not seen any better performance and the symptoms still remain. I am waiting on an engine air filter that should arrive today.

I also purchased a cheap laptop and I’m in the process of installing forscan.

I wanted to upload a video of the truck running, but I guess I can’t upload a video more than five seconds long

I've had a similar issue recently with one of my 6.0...

When you get forscan (or whatever, I was able to monitor this with both Torque and scantool II) check the vgt value. Normal circumstances that value should be 25%-70% (35-50% is what I usually notice). If the unison ring sticks it will command 15% or 85%, the max values. If you see either of these numbers there is an issue with the vgt.

Mine was commanding 85% indicating a failure and I had very low power until I got to higher RPM's, and then still not much power. I think about 6psi was the highest boost reading I got at 3000rpm.
I was 1200 miles from home and felt a little bad doing it to get home. I was monitoring egt's, which would climb faster than normal in this situation.

New information from Forscan

Hi everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to contribute.

Below you will find the log file from my FORSCAN run.

It appears that I have a few different issues going on. Below is a summary:
P0272 - Cylinder #4 Contribution/Balance (Fuel Injector, Valve train assembly, Compression rings)
P0299 - Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost (Exhaust Pressure Sensor 'A' Circuit)
P0478 - Exhaust Pressure Control Valve High Input (Exhaust restriction)

I’m still kind of sifting through this and I want to look at the other replies.

If anyone has any thoughts, let me know.

Thanks again

I would start with a relative compression test to verify the engine is worth putting money into. A test you can easily do without any diagnostic equipment is to warm the engine up all the way with the oil fill cap off and watch for excessive blow by and pressure coming out of the fill tube. Also listen for popping out the intake and exhaust

Thanks for bearing with us on getting FORScan vs believing the Innova or the Launch.

Several things to check next:
1. What are MAP, Baro, and EBP (in psig) at KOEO?
2. Consider removing the EBP sensor and running a thick weed whacker string through the tube to ensure that the tube is clear.
3. Remove the MAP sensor hose and inspect (no holes/cracks and no plugging).
4. Verify that the intake nipple that the MAP hose attaches to is not plugged.
5. Make sure that the CAC boots don't show any signs of leaking (soot/oil).
6. Sometimes the Intercooler (actually a Charge-Air-Cooler) will develop a leak. We can get back to this later.

Sometimes the turbo VANES will stick. The full version of FORScan can command the VGT actuator.
