Single spindle nut

If the snap ring on the axle shaft was against the spindle nut that is wrong. Is the stub shaft not sticking out far enough for you to install the snap ring? If that is the case then you need to reach in from the back of the knuckle and push the shaft outboard with your hand or a large screwdriver/prybar. As I said, changing to the two nut style is pointless. Everything from the spindle nut out is identical on both spindle nut designs.

As I said, changing to the two nut style is pointless. Everything from the spindle nut out is identical on both spindle nut designs.

You just take a big screwdriver from back behind and push the stub shaft out
Pry against the axle housing and the mud slinger on the stub shaft
If you have greased the spindle bearing properly, you'll hear the excess grease squish out, then you install the snap ring
