Good Morning,
We are working on a 2008 Ford E250 that has been converted to be handicap-accessible. The customer that drives this vehicle has had injuries that make it a little hard for him to turn the steering wheel while driving. Do any of guys have any thoughts or suggestions for anything we can do to lighten the steering? All the components seem to be in perfect working order, fluid is clean, and it is properly aligned, so it appears like the system is working as it should, he just wants it lighter so he doesn't struggle with it. Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you.
The obvious solution is a hydro assist setup such as those sold by several offroad outfitters such as Howe. You can even buy the hydro assist steering boxes from redhead steering. Your best solution would be to just purchase an entire kit from someone like Howe. https://www.howeperformance.com/
Reducing caster while staying within the factory specs will also make the vehicle easier to turn when the vehicle is moving. The more caster the vehicle has the more tendency it has to want to go in a straight line making it somewhat harder to turn.

They make kits that have assist cylinders no larger than the average steering stabilizer shock. The modified steering box is the control valve, thats why they have 4 ports, there is no linkage.
The assist cylinder replaces the steering stabilzer, the steering box is the control valve, they dont use linkage they use small diameter hydraulic hoses which attach to the steering box and the assist cylinder.
The kit can be installed on any truck that utilizes a steering stabilizer shock. Its a steering "ASSIST" kit not a hydraulic ram steering system that you find on john deere tractors.

The steering box goes where your old steering box is located, The new steering pump goes where your old steering pump is located, the assist cylinder replaces your old steering stabilizer shock.
The cooler will replace your existing cooler and the pressure lines should be obvious.

To the op I have a 01 e350 7.3 and as of this point I have replaced everything in the front end from the pavement to the drivers hands on my daily driver van. It had gotten tough and wandered a lot. Significant improvements came with ea repair but the hug reward was from replacing the column and steering gear. It steers easy now, like 1 finger easy. I had adjusted the old box more than once and I had multiple things wrong, cracked clock spring and bad steering wheel bearing. It’s effortless now and it has honestly exceeded my expectations. I used this steering gear from rock auto.
