No rain in the forecast yesterday, but it rained several hours last night. No rain today also in the forecast but it is raining right now. Interesting.
It wasn't me. I can't afford to play. I don't have that kind of disposable income.
I'm enjoying salami. Salami, cheese, and focaccia. One of the best gifts I got this year. Molinari Salame. My brother in law picked it up at the factory. One of the few benefits of living in The City. We get to buy directly from the manufacturer. It used to be that this salami was a rare delicacy that tourists and travelers would bring this stuff back to wherever they came from. Now, they can order it on Amazon. Unfortunately, the focaccia is still a locals only thing. You literally have to go to the bakery, line up, and hope that they don't sell out before your turn comes. One of my cousins did that. Went down to the focaccia bakery at 7 AM, lined up, and bought a few sheets. That little bakery only makes 1 thing. Focaccia. Their oven is only so big. They can only make so many units. People just have to buy it before it sells out. And it sells out every day. They have a Wikipedia page. But no internet orders or sales on Amazon.
Another thing about living in The City, you care about supporting small local businesses. Molinari Salame & Liguria Bakery are small, family owned businesses which have been in the same families for generations.
Less than a week left of this year. It hardly seems possible that another year is almost gone already.
No rain in the forecast today, but then again, the last rain we had was not forecast either. They do say we will get two hours of rain tomorrow afternoon around 1pm so we will see how that plays out.
The local salami. Avocado. Cheese. Olives. Lettuce.
A nod to our ancestors.
"Grandpa taught you how to make salad?"
No. These are all California grown. We're Californian. Try getting vegetables like this in The Land of Canned Foods.
My nephew. His grandpa, my uncle, was a career cook. Not a chef. He did the hard jobs. Wok station, broiler station, toaster oven, saute line......... everything involving high heat. He didn't teach me a thing. He never stopped to talk to me, explain what he was doing, or even acknowledge any of us kids running around while he was making meals.
But he taught me a lot. I learned by watching. Monkey see, monkey do. Mimicry. I saw him stick meat in the oven. I stuck meat in the oven. I can now make toast in a toaster oven, like some of the finest diners on the side of the road.
Although we often took a dry salami with us when we were backpacking. Dense source of calories.
It was a camp staple when I was a kid. It didn't require refrigeration. In case we couldn't shoot anything or the fish weren't biting, we always had salami as a backup. If we had a good hunt, we just saved it. It never went to waste.
