Bad Overdrive Switch?
Bad Overdrive Switch?
My O/D switch stopped working and I need to replace it. 2007 XL 4x4 with 4.6. 3.55 gears . Is the only way to replace the switch replacing the gearshift lever? Or is there a secret way to disassemble the shift lever and replace just the switch?
I just towed a 4500 lb load over the Rockies. Going up the mountains West of Denver I was in Second gear most of the way and several miles in First. Surprisingly the mileage averaged out to 12.1 mpg. But no more power than my '64 Dodge with 4-barrel 318 and 3.23 gears. The only good thing I can say about the 4.6 is it revs happily for miles at a time.
Thanks,
R.

Replacing the switch or the shifter probably won't fix it.
Most often the problem is the wires that connect to the shifter inside the steering column. Take the plastic cover off of the steering column and look for a broken or damaged wire to the shifter.
