So I finally got an oscilloscope and was able to read the PIP sensor output, signal seems pretty good.

Those black stators were all recalled? and replaced with white ones
If it is black, it will be coming apart and failing
The DU30C Motorcraft stator you need has white plastic
That wave does not look nice and square to me

I would agree with the above. Those PIP pulses do not look "square" to me either.

Are you referring to the drop on the edge of the wave or the narrow wave? I wasn’t aware there were 2 different color stators.

saw plenty of those fail when hot, worked for ford years ago. some never were replaced correctly either, make sure distributor shaft bearings arent loose.

I found this picture from another thread that shows what a PIP signal looks like, to me it looks pretty similar to mine. Some other pictures I’ve seen look about the same. I’d like to test the PIP when the truck won’t run.

Good catch finding that photo of the PIP pulse train. I would expect a cleaner square wave. Definitely good to monitor that while trying to catch when the engine stalls.

the shaft seems pretty tight, but if I have to replace the sensor I’ll probably just replace the whole distributor

I’m gonna keep the oscilloscope in the truck so I can check the PIP signal if/when it messes up again.
