Check Engine Light 6.7L How Often?

Read a lot of accounts of CEL on modern day diesels. At what mileage or year of ownership are owners seeing these show up and what emission components were the lights related to.

TIA

I’m am totally convinced it all comes down to usage. The biyearly camper hauler is going to have a cel long before the average hotshot trucker.

Personally I was over 200k before it ever had an issue.

My experience is that all my cels that indicated a mechanical problem where actually bad sensors.

There is no rhyme or reason as to when. I have replaced all my key sensors and I only have 25k miles on my truck.

I am going to use the same rationale that diesel haters use. I know a lot more people with gassers that have had CEL's than diesels therefore diesels are more reliable🤣.

You can't set a number on when you can expect a CEL, they happen sometimes within days of new owners getting their trucks.
And, run the spectrum of causes, not all just emissions related.
And, you don't go looking for trouble anyway, that is a defeatist attitude.

First CEL came on at ~120k miles for a defective EGT sensor. Eventually replaced all four of them between 120k - 150k miles and just had a CEL come on 2 weeks ago at almost 300k miles for EGT sensor #2. Purchased one from my local Ford dealer for $156 and good to go. Also had a CEL come on last December at ~270k miles for a defective DEF heater.

24520 miles. No clue what it was for. I was out of town and a long ways from a shop so by the time I got ready to take it in the light had turned it's self off. I'm assuming some kind of o2 sensor since I bought the trick at 1200' ASL and the light triggered at 9200' ASL.
2 days later the output shaft seal failed and dumped fluid all over my driveway. Maybe they programmed a light for seal failure? No clue.

As stated somewhere above, you can't really put a number on it as there are so many variables. Usage and maintenance has a HUGE impact on it - my last truck the first CEL I saw was at 120k. Fuel quality, replacement part quality (and labor quality), even a factory part quality can all affect when or even IF a CEL is going to come on.

If you're looking for common failures, there really aren't many that are devastating on the 6.7. A few issues earlier on that have been solved, some that are a fraction of 1% of all that are built, some due to neglect.

This is where I am at currently. My 6.7 is NOT a daily driver as it sits in the driveway with a big truck camper on it. It is a 21' with ~34k miles on it so it is not like it hasn't been driven. I typically have a ~6k lb boat in tow in addition to the truck camper in the bed so the truck is always under load while using it. I do all the maintenance fuel filters/oil changes and other required maintenance. Also bought a Snyder valve for the fuel separator and drain a sample of fuel each month to check for condensation.

Just read so much of the fickleness of these modern day diesels. Really like the power while underway. Have an ESP through the 6 year mark or 75k miles which ever comes first.

mine had the P20EE at around 33K miles if I recall. SCR was bad.

Nothing else and I am at 71K and some change. this is a 2021 Truck. Around 23K a year on it.
