The drivers side door frequently locks after I get out. I try to be careful and not push the handle down but it still locks often. I recently replaced the handle shaft and the mechanism seemed OK but a bit sloppy from wear. The locking problem was there before the shaft replacement. I hoped the replacement would address the issue but did not. Any suggestions how to fix this?
A couple things come to mind. You can try installing a light spring on the mechanism to help hold the handle up (inside the door where it won't show), but not stiff enough to make opening the door difficult. Or, and the purists may have a fit on this, but you can rotate the handle to a position where the weight of the handle won't lock the door.
My truck is a 54 F100. When I had the mechanism apart to replace the handle shaft, both springs were OK.
Merc as you know, that’s a tough location to work in with the window regulator close by. Wondering if I buy a new opening operator with the arm maybe it will work.
From your initial post and description it sounded like you were looking for a possible fix rather than replace. It sounds like the detents are worn, which means replace the assembly if you can't figure out a way to rebuild them. I don't think the remote is very expensive, and it obviously would be the easiest way to remedy the issue. I was just tossing out some possible band aids.
You are correct Merc. I was thinking some other member may have had this issue and could offer information as to the cause and how they fix it. I appreciate your suggestions.
