home networking hub

Any internet gurus out there? We recently installed satellite internet, and we have two computers in this house. Before, we were sharing one external modem (so the house is fully wired with ethernet cat-5 cables). We had an extra hub at work. It is now sitting downstairs from me connected to the other computer. The problem? Its not configured properly or something. Our computer person at work told us that we may have to configure it to connect to the net. Anyone have any idea how to do something like this? I know its a longshot, but I had to ask. My father isnt happy I get all that fast internet, and he is stuck on the dialup still. ANY help is appreciated. Thanks

You need a router rather than a plain bub to have a home network. You can do it if you have an always on computer to act as the router with a second network card in it. Your old system modem may have had a built in router.

Torque1st is right, you need a router. I would recommend Linksys routers. They are easy to setep, and they have good products. You can use the hub to piggyback off of the router, but you probably won't need it unless you have quite a few computers in your house. I would get a 8 port router, that way you have plenty of extra ports.

The connection in question is Direcway from DirecTv. It connects to a computer via USB, and the internet connection is shared via the existing cat-5 wiring I have to any computer that is connected to my computer using XPs internet sharing tool (so the installer told me). Do I still need a router?

Actually, no. Your XP box will act as your firewall/router for machines that are internal to your house.

You'll simple have to give the internal network card on your XP box an IP address, connect it to the hub, and give the other machines a similar address. Next tell the other machines that the XP is their default router and give them the DNS addresses that were supplied by your provider.

If you have any questions, e-mail me

XP box? I am not exactly sure what you mean by that. I have been posting to another online forum, and this just seems to be getting harder and harder as I go. I might just tell my pops that he needs to call the professional back to do it (it would have been done by now, but hes lazy and didnt call her when he was supposed to *shakes fist*).

You have Windows XP on at least one of your computers.

I would actually go buy a new machine to setup as the router/firewall. This will keep your files safe on your machines.

Well, I tell you what...if you are having problems and have an old junker machine around that would work for a firewall check this place out: BBI Agent

The gist here is that you answer a few simple questions about your junker machine and then download a customized linux kernel that'll run as your firewall. Now don't panic. What you download is actually a 1.4MB Floppy image that you'll dump to a blank floppy. The entire system runs from there. Your junker doesn't need a CD or even a hard drive...just the floppy.

I put together a junker a while back that consisted of a 486DX 33 w/ 16MB memory, a super crappy video card, and 2 10MB network cards. Answered the questions, downloaded and exploded the image, and was up and running in only a few minutes.

You can't get much easier than that!

It is easier and a whole lot more energy efficient to just buy a router like the Linksys or a Netgear and plug all of your machines into it. Check to see if your sat modem has an ethernet port or that your router has a USB port.
