Search Engine Switched !!!
Up until a week or so ago when I searched for a topic by typing in the address box near the top of Internet Explorer, I got a list of "found" sites on the left side of the screen and a small thumbnail of the pages on the right. Somehow, my search engine got switched to some page that doesn't seem to locate anything. How can I switch back to what I had before?

Sounds like you got hijacked. Same thing happened to me. Whenever I reboot the PC the new "search" page comes up. If you do a search on FTE, there was a thread a while back that listed how to get rid of it.

I had the same thing happen and could not get rid of it and get back to the default MSN Search.
The solution is to 'repair' IE.
Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.
Locate Internet Explorer and click on it. If you have the option (based upon operating system) to 'repair', choose that and execute it. This restores IE to a previous saved version. It cleared this problem up completely.
You still need to download Ad-Aware and run it to remove all spyware.
The solution is to 'repair' IE.

Locate Internet Explorer and click on it. If you have the option (based upon operating system) to 'repair', choose that and execute it. This restores IE to a previous saved version. It cleared this problem up completely.
You still need to download Ad-Aware and run it to remove all spyware.

Or . . in Internet Exploder you can always go to:
TOOLS/
Internet Options/
General/
and type in the url you want your web browser to start on.
. . . or, you can go to the page you want to be your start page and using the same menu I just laid out, select "USE CURRENT".

P.S. FYI - you can be "hijacked" with a tiny javascript ~or~ meta element no spyware will even consider touching.

I had that problem but I didn't know it was related to spyware 
I did get adware and spybot a while back.
I just now noticed I had it back. haha
