For my latest issues with the Excursion I’m having direct clutch solenoid problems and codes. I brought it to my local transmission shop and they diagnosed it as electrical issues because of other codes involved. I had it brought to Ford and they want $7000 to replace the transmission because they believe it’s physical not electrical. Here is the list of codes from the transmission shop that led them to believe it’s an electrical problem:
And now here is the stealerships breakdown and quote:
P0766 means the the direct clutch solenoid is physically stuck. When it gets the command to move the armature, nothing happens. If this were an electrical problem you would have a code for an electrical problem.
Changing the whole transmission will fix this problem. So will changing just the direct solenoid. One costs quite a bit more than the other. I would stay far, far away from that dealer. They are just looking to extract as much money from you as possible. It is possible that they are honest but incompetent, but I'll bet the problem is that they are just looking to rip you off.
The other shop that says that it is electrical is probably honest, but certainly incompetent to fix this.
The direct clutch solenoid is the problem. It needs to be replaced.

Thank you very much for the response. When I talked with the other shop originally before Ford had their hands on the truck they were under the impression that it might be electrical because of all the other codes listed for the transfer case and everything else. Out of curiosity, why would I have all these other codes, and why didn’t Ford say anything about them?
i'd have reputable local shop drop the pan/replace the solidode first, it could well be a very large money saver, as to dealers sadly many have become parts changers, they would rather sell a factory rebuilt or new part, leaving the warranty work on ford or whatever brand rather than themselves.

From what I’ve seen, this specific solenoid doesn’t seem to be too hard to get to. Is this not something I could replace myself?
There could be an electrical problem, but not with the transmission, I was just addressing the transmission issue. All of those other codes are not related to what the trans is doing, in my opinion.
I have never once looked back into a shop at the mechanics / technicians (or whatever they want to be called now), and though to myself “ man, those guys are so smart and talented, I could never do what they do”.
No one cares about your junk more than you do. If you want it something done correctly, you have to do it yourself.

AMEN to that, if one has the talents and can do, your way better off.
