Keep your hands where they can see them, and don't get out of your car/truck unless they tell you too. Once, when my girlfriend got pulled over, I decided that when the officer was in his car I was gonna get my cell phone out of my bag in the trunk. wasn't too cool to have the cop jump out and pull his gun on me. I can totally understand where he was coming from, though.

*******WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE PULLED OVER***********
1) When you see the lights in your mirror, SLOW DOWN, DO NOT DROP THE ANCHOR.

2) Signal that you are changing lanes. This lets the officer know you see him/her.

3) Pull to the right or left shoulder, If you pull to the right, pull as far over as you can within reason, this provides the officer with an increased margin of safety from passing vehicles.

4) DO NOT REACH FOR YOUR WALLET!!!!!!!!

5) KEEP YOUR SEATBELT ON!!!!!!!!!!

6) PLACE YOUR HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND DO NOT REMOVE THEM UNTIL THE OFFICER IS ASKS FOR YOUR LICENSE!!!!!!

7) The officer may approach your vehicle and say something to the effect of "Good evening Sir, May I see your license, registration , and proof of insurance please?" DO NOT SAY NO!!!!!

8) BE POLITE!!!!!!!!!

9) At his point you MAY be informed of the infraction.

10) BE POLITE!!!!!!!!

11) As you are retrieving the requested documentation if you have not been told the reason being pulled over, YOU MAY ASK, BUT DO SO POLITELY!!!!!!!!! If you TRULY DO NOT KNOW, you may say something like, "Officer, may I ask why I was stopped?"

12) BE POLITE!!!!!!!!

13) IF YOU DO KNOW WHY YOU WERE STOPPED DO NOT PLAY STUPID and ask anyway. The officer WILL interpret this as your being a SMARTASS... THAT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!

14) BE POLITE!!!!!!!!!

15) Answer ALL the officers questions POLITELY AND HONESTLY...THEY CAN TELL IF YOU ARE LYING...... AGAIN, NOT GOOD FOR YOU

16) BE POLITE!!!!!!!

17) When you are speaking to the officer LOOK AT HIM/HER, by looking away this is seen as you may be too nervous to look at him/her, therefore hiding something, or in some cases a sign of disrespect......AGAIN, NOT GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

18) BE POLITE!!!!!!!

19) When the officers goes to return to his vehicle DO NOT BECOME ARGUMENTATIVE!!!! Whatever he/she says "Sit tight, I be right back." "Please stay in your vehicle." JUST say "YES SIR/MA'AM."

20) When the officer is in his/her vehicle DO NOT EXIT YOUR VEHICLE FOR ANY REASON..THIS IS SEEN AS A POTENTIAL THREAT TO THE OFFICERS SAFETY AND WILL BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY!!!! JUST ASK bcf!!!!!!!!
Do not make a phone call or anything, JUST SIT THERE!!!!!!!
The reason the officer goes back to his vehicle is to check your information for validity and run a warrant check on you. AS WELL AS OBSERVE YOUR BEHAVIOR.

YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT THE OFFICER DOES NOT KNOW YOU AND YOU MAY VERY WELL BE A BAD GUY...THE OFFICER DOES NOT KNOW THIS UNTIL HE CHECKS.......

This is a simple guideline. By following some of these rules YOU WILL GREATLY DECREASE YOUR CHANCES of getting a summons!!!!!!! As well as provide a safe environment for everyone......
The thing I would stress the most is BE POLITE AND HONEST, a vehicle stop is not a personal attack on you, merely an observation of an infraction. If you take it personal and get hot tempered YOU WILL GET A SUMMONS possibly even ARRESTED if warranted.

BE POLITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You did not mention to flash your pre-paid legal card with your license.

I'm and old fusker I guess at 49, but I've driven more miles than any two folks you know and yourself ever will.

If I were to grow up in this world, there would be a prepaid legal card in my wallet!

Cops are just people. The do not administer justice according to the law. They make mistakes and bad judgments while doing an impossible job. It is not an easy one!

However, NEVER trust one! First and foremost they protect themselves from ridicule and harm. Their next mission is to make their boss money...YOUR MONEY!

I had ONE moving violation in over 1.5 million miles of driving. That idiot was wrong!

Also, if it's a major street, don't pull over so cars are swerving all over the place to get around. Put your blinker on so the cops know u see him, and drive a little ways until you see a side street (within reasonal distance). You don't have to pull RIGHT over when a cop puts his lights on. I got pulled over once and I swear he let me go because I took a sidestreet to pull over w/ no traffic for him to get hit by while talking to me. If you pull over in a stupid spot, I bet he'd give you a ticket just for being a dummy.

I've been pulled over 4 times in the 20 years I've been driving and I deserved it every time!

Twice for speeding, ran a stop sign and got nailed for making a u turn on the highway. Got warnings on the u turn and stop sign but got fined on the the speeding violations.

What is a "pre-paid legal card"?

For about $30 a month you have a team of lawyers at your service. Fax them the ticket and they work it through the courts.

Unless a felony is involved they will see there is nothing on your record. All legal and playing the system. I don't need to tell you how high car insurance is!

My son had 2 tickets while on the plan. Neither are on his record. My daughter has had one since being on the plan.

They also give advice on just about any legal matter and compared to a normal lawyer fees are cheap.

Professional Drivers [Truck Drivers] have used this type of service for at least 10 years.

Instead of a turn signal, I turn on my 4-ways. With a turn signal the officer still doesn't know if you've seen him, but with 4-ways and slowing down he gets the message.

Another important thing to do that I believe was not in the list of DO’s
If you have tinted windows and they are not of the legal shade, roll down the rear widows so they may see inside the vehicle. As stated before officers like to see inside the car.

It gives them a comfort zone.

I am only 21, but have been pulled over more than 20 times. I have 3 tickets to my name. I feel that it is the politeness I have extended to the Officer pulling me over that has saved me a ticket, because I've probably deserved one about a dozen of the times pulled over.
I carry a .45 in the commision of my daily life, but where I life (thankfully in the still-free West) I need not tell law-enforcement about it. Generally, when I see those lights come on, I begin rolling down the window as I'm signaling to pull over. As soon as I'm stopped, I reach with my right hand to double check that the .45 is concealed and to pull out my wallet. I then lay the wallet on the dash, shut off the engine, and place both hands on the wheel, at 10 and 2. Having a single-cab pickup, it is very obvious to any officer what I am up to in the cab, and as such I am blatantly doing nothing.
I like to get the wallet out first, so that my hands are already on the wheel when the officer steps out of his car, and the registration is contained in a pouch above the visor.
It's much less stressful on everyone involved if you don't have to be reaching anywhere a cop can't see while he's standing at your window.
