1994 7.3 idi turbo with E4OD. Prior owners had trans rebuilt and TC at 205k in 2005. Also another TC at 255k in 2015. I have had the truck for four years and now has 286k. I don’t use it daily but it runs great except for transmission issues starting.
1st thing I noticed is I have to let it run in drive for about 10 seconds before giving it gas for transmission to grab. This is only after the
vehicle has been sitting for a few days.
Now I am having issues with TC dropping in and out of lock. It helps to keep OD off but longer I drive worse it gets. It will sometimes go into limp mode. Transmission shop suggesting a rebuild after driving it and noticing hard shifts along with my issues description.
With only 80K on trans and 30k on TC, I’m wondering what else I should try before I decide to have transmission rebuilt.
Turns out it was my 3rd brake light was out. Crazy that causes such problems.
On the needing to wait about 10 seconds after first starting it for transmission to grab, I read there is a check valve in TC that goes bad and allows fluid to drain back to the trans. Not a big deal as long as I know to be patient after it sits for a while.
Thx! I will get it done. Is the fill and flush service where they don’t take off drain pan and filter any better, or is best to do in the old fashioned way?
i do it old fashioned drop the pan and change filter. but i also have old trucks.
but our resident Ford trans engineer says you only need to pump out the old oil and put in fresh, which is what i have ford do at service time since my newer trucks are still under warranty..
unless of course it is very old, burnt, and dirty.
