1991 7.3banks turbo, e4OD, 4x4 f350
The truck has about 5k on a fully rebuilt transmission. I was towing a trailer over the weekend so I kept the overdrive button pushed to the OFF position, but after dropping off the trailer and trying to drive normally I found overdrive doesn't work! The OD light flashed when I got on the freeway, but no overdrive. SO, I pulled over, disconnected the batteries for about 10 minutes, and kept driving. Light stopped flashing but truck is still ODless. Transmission shop said its not their problem, it has to do with a shift positioning sensor on the throttle body or some sort of temperature gauge sensor-they weren't too helpful. I just need to know what to look for under the hood to see what's going on. Any ideas?
do you have the banks trans command as well with that turbo?
any shop that tells you a FIPL/TPS is not their problem after rebuilding an E40D for our trucks isn't worth they're salt.they are supposed to replace that after every rebuild and set it up for you.if not,the trans can be gutless and actually prematurely fail because of it.it's this important, and they should know this if they are willing to take your $ and rebuild your diesel E40D.
did they install a new converter too or did you opt to use the old one?
also, why did you feel the need to tow in direct drive instead of OD? especially on a rebuilt trans?
you should NOT pull over an clear the E40D from safety mode and continue to drive.
it's entered safety mode to protect itself,so you can slowly limp it home/shop for proper diagnoses and repair.do your wallet a huge favor, and try to resist the urge of doing that again.
any rate, start by pulling the code(s) is the best plan of action.
also,i wonder why he thinks your TOT sensor may be bad.did he not replace the solenoid pack?
i guess you'll know if 26 pops up.
makes a guy wonder if the last trans was bad or improperly diagnosed.is this the same symptom prior to having the trans rebuilt?
No, the Torque Converter was totally toasted on last transmission-the whole tranny had been poorly rebuilt by previous owner, transmission shop showed my the pile of screwed up/broken parts they pulle out of the transmission when they rebuilt it.
YES, I have a banks trans command (???)
I towed in direct drive because I was going over the hwy 17 in the santa cruz mountains (steep, curvy, slow) with 3 yards of dirt. I keep the OD off since I cant get over 55mph on that highway anyway, and the truck seems pretty gutless at 45-55 when overdrive is engaged (the RPM's are only at about 1500 at that speed in OD).
So I need to have the codes pulled?
If you end up needing a new one, I can sell you my rebuild E4OD for less than you can get yours rebuilt again. 15K miles on a Ford Motorcraft rebuild. Ran perfect when I took it out.
mine is still under warranty, the shop is just saying that the sensor on the throttle body (filp?) isn't part of the rebuilt tranny, therefor isn't covered. I guess I'll take it to a closer local shop this morning to see if they will pull codes for me.
Sorry, guess I knew that, it's just what the shop told me on the phone. I'm taking it to a local shop to have them pull the codes for me, but its going to be $90 for a diagnosis from either of the two local places, and they can't do it 'til next week! Looks like I'm not taking the truck camping this weekend...
you can buy a code reader at most any local auto store.it's just the old school, low cost (30$ ish) ob1 reader.they come with instructions and it's pretty simple really.
with the diesel for KOEO (key on,engine off) you need to hold the fuel pedal to the floor is all while reading.so if the unit has a hold function, simply plug it all in,turn the key on,hold the linkage to WOT and then turn hold off.count the beeps and let us know what she tells ya.
all E40D owners should have one of these scanners anyway.they really help diagnosing issues,or at least most of the time, point you in the right direction anyway.plus you save $ by being able to read the codes yourself.you can do it with just a volt meter, but for the $ for the old readers,it's just not worth the hassle.
I can't count how many times you've saved me time, frustration, and money FORDFF250HDXLT!!! I'm heading off on a camping trip tomorrow (without my truck!!!) but will get a reader and throw the codes up here as soon as I get back, Thanks AGAIN!
Hey, anyone know where the reader plugs in on the 87-91 style trucks with the E40D? Being that they also don't have the OD switch in the shift lever, but on the dash, so I don't know if there are issues if the light flashes or not?

The test port is on the driverside fender. Right behind the over flow bottle.
there is if your truck came with the E40D transmission?
see speeder's post above.
look up high by the hood spring, almost all the way back to the cowl.
two plugs.one large, one small.they are housed inside clips, and slide out to be able to plug into your scanner.
READ THE CODES!
I did the test twice with the same result:
** ** ********* ********* ** ** ********* ********* * ** ** ** **
and then it stops. So, I read that as 22 9 9 22 9 9 1 22 22 but if the spaces are closer together than I think it would be 11 11 9 9 11 11 9 9 1 11 11 11 11
Which according to the book means everything is OK, as 11 is the system pass code, and thats supposed to happen twice (as seen above) 9 is not mentioned at all, and supposedly different codes are separated by a single flash, which only happens once in my sequence. WHAT DOES IT MEAN???? Please help!
