Noisy Speedometer

I have a 53 F100 with the 239 flathead V8. It has been sitting still except for a couple of recent driveway miles since 1967. When I took it for a test drive the first time and got up some speed, I heard a noise that sounded like it was coming from under the dash. Also, the speedometer needle was bouncing all over the place. I bought and installed a new speedo cable but there was no change. I then cleaned and modified the old cable so I could drive the speedo with a drill, while sitting still. Same noise and bounce, but maybe a slight bit less. So, I guess it is in the speedo. The question is, is there any way to lube the speedometer internals? Maybe an oil port? What's the best way to lube the new cable? Also, if I keep running it with the drill, I wonder if it will loosen the effects of sitting unused or 57 years? And ideas will be appreciated. TIA

There is an oil port in the top where the cable goes in. There is a bushing there. It takes a few drops of 3-in-1 type oil, or clock oil.

Does anyone know if the 1948 speedometer has a port to lubricate it?

It's been a long time since I've had mine out, but I believe that it does.

I don't want to take it out unless I know for sure

You shouldn't have to pull the speedo to oil it, if you have something like this. It only needs a couple of drops.
