Speedometer Lubrication (NOT the cable...)

Happy Saturday - Anyone have thoughts on how to lubricate the speedometer? I have a new speedo cable that I appropriately lubed the snot out of...but it seems the speedometer itself needs lubricating after sitting for forty years.

Symptom: while driving, the speedo cable has trouble spinning every now and again and seems to get good and twisted. When under enough pressure it unwinds making an awful squealing noise and the speedometer pegs to the end until the cable is back to normal.

The "Control" Test: FWIW - I tested the cable's ability to spin by removing it from the speedo and taking a good long trip. Not once did it reproduce the earlier symptoms. So I'm guessing the speedo itself needs a little lubricating.

I used a little 3in1 oil on my speedometer to get it working again.

I there a particular way to get it into the internal mechanicals? It seems mostly sealed.

If I recall correctly there is a weep hole to drip oil into. Mine is a 48, so it may differ.

I thought mine had a little flip cover and felt inside to absorb oil. I will check as I have mine out right now, Oh what year you talking?

Yes, there is a weep hole behind the speedo to drop some oil, 3 in 1 would be good.

If that doesn't do it, take out your instrument panel, remove the speedo from that and lube it up good. I have used WD 40 with the nozzle on mine. I tried to get a every moving part, until I could grab the back of the speedo where the cable goes and spin it by hand. I think you need to spin it counter clock wise. I have out a quip tip in my drill and I served that into the hole where the cable goes and set the drill on reverse and squeeze the trigger to get the needle to move. Some guys don't like WD 40 so 3 in 1 would work there too I guess.

I would keep the cable detached u til you get a chance to do that.....

Yeah I thought they had one, last time I had mine out I was able to spin it with figured and get up to I thought it was about 40 so I figured it was good. I know off topic but I seem to recall that the Dizzy had one too. Am I correct of could that have been one of my other old cars. The reason I ask is that it is very important to keep all the felts in the wet with that oil, how many lube the dizzy lobes where points ride??? Sorry didn't mean take this off topic.

This would work well on our model years but be careful on 60s era vehicles as the odometers started to have wipers on them that smudged the numbers if you run them backwards to discourage odometer roll backs.
