2005 6.0 Overboost

Okay hear me out...

I've read through every forum post I can find on this issue, and nobody seems to be having the same issue I am. My truck is manual and only has 82,000 miles on it, no tune. When under heavy load, especially when towing, it builds too much boost. 30 is as high as it gets, but if it stays there for too long I get the wrench and limp mode. I plugged in while the wrench light was on and got an overboost code. Based on advice from a DieselTechRon video, I put the VGT PID on my Edge insight, and watched it as I drove. It would very frequently stick at 15% during normal driving, and would alwaysstick at 15% during an overboost situation. While towing, I would have to keep the throttle below 50% to prevent building too much boost.

Since then, I've pulled and cleaned the turbo and replaced the unison ring. Everything moved freely when I put it back together. That helped tremendously. Watching the VGT, it doesn't ever stick at 15% anymore. But while it was a big improvement, I was still able to get the boost to climb back up to 30psi when towing, although it now takes WOT to get there instead of 50%. What's strange is that the VGT reading is still above 15%, moving around in the 20-30% range. If I'm climbing over the boost limit set in the computer, shouldn't the VGT be pegged trying to bleed it off?

After that, I replaced the EBP sensor and cleaned the tube. The old sensor was pretty dirty(not completely plugged from what I could tell) and appeared to be shot based on the readings I was getting(the same as being unplugged). The EBP, MAP, and BARO readings all appear to be normal now and very close to each other, KOEO. While driving, they seem to be in the normal range. Again, after doing this I noticed improvement. The sound while driving was much different than before, low speed whistle was much louder and less muffled than before. I did notice a slight decrease in power, which I have read happens after swapping out the EBP sensor or plugging it back in after being unplugged. But still, while towing, it managed to get up to and sustain 29psi for long enough to go into limp mode.

Has anyone ran into this? I hate throwing parts at it, but would a MAP be next? It seems to be fine, the tube was clean and the nipple was clear... I'm hoping someone knows more about this than I do.

Post up on the 6.0 portion of the forum and you’ll most likely get the answer you need. If you get Forescan you can post up all the diag numbers and it will help.
