Hello. I’m having a problem with my 2000 7.3. It manly happened when I put it in reverse the truck kinda stumbles like the torque converter is locked and kinda wants to kill the truck. But just recently when coming to a stop it wants to keep moving. I’m wondering if it’s the torque converter going bad?
I had this happen recently when I was backing up a trailer. My wife used the truck and said it stalled out while on an incline at a red light . I checked the fluid and sure enough, it was low. Then I had a suspicion....took out the fill plug on the transfer case...and about a quart of fluid gushed out. Turns out I had a bad input shaft seal on the transfer case. Haven't had any stumbling or stalling issues with it since.
Now I get to replace my oil cooler seals and flush my cooling system for the 2nd time in a year....guess the Vaseline I used last time wasn't "lubey" enough.
though it was low transmission fluid not transfer case fluid causing the stumbling/lockup issues.. they are separate right??
Yes, the input seal on the transfer case was bad.....was letting fluid from the transmission flow into the transfer case. Thats what dropped the transmission fluid level and caused the transfer case to be so full. The stalling/stumbling was caused by the low transmission fluid.
No more whirring noise at 15-25mph now either. I had thought my carrier bearing was going out, but it was the transfer case making the noise.
so the transfer case fills up with trans fluid.. they are the same fluid right?? but wow that is crazy.. you would not see a leak as it was leaking inside so to speak.. how idd you figure that out?? way overfull transfer case?? was it easy fix??

Fluid is Mercon V in the transmission and I put the Ford Transfer Case Fluid (Mercon 3 if I recall) so not the same fluid. Easy fix, but the transfer case has to come out to do it. Cant see the leak....just had a hunch with the stalling in reverse, and uphill.....checked the trans fluid level and it was low. I had just flushed it 9mos ago so I knew it was right. I pulled the fill plug on the transfer case and out came the fluid....dark too, so it was time to change the transfer case fluid anyway. Watch this video....
Alright I’ve been busy finally picked up a gauge and hooked it up today. Park it’s at 90psi, neutral is at 90 psi, reverse it drops to 30 psi and slowly goes up to 145 psi, and in drive it’s at 90psi. The pressures were done will idling if that matters?
It looks like a leak in the reverse hydraulic circuit. It could be in the valve body or in the reverse clutch.
thanks for your response. I will say I’m not a mechanic but I can do some things. So I’m going to assume it’s not the torque converter? And what should I dig into first if you don’t mind helping me out?
