so is there a coupling in the shaft housing to break apart so i can have a new gear box pressed on or do i take the entire shaft and box to the shop?
There is no coupling. The steering shaft and worm gear is one piece. It may be able to be serviced and the gear replaced with aftermarket parts, but the original part was serviced from Ford as one piece, shaft and worm gear together, basic part number 3524 in the diagram below.
still having issues finding a box i have found this one on EBAY just now. Does this make sense to try?
Classic Performance steering box Vega Saginaw manual 25-1 gear ratio
i have been seeing these but unsure of fit even tho it SAYS so.

it's been 30 yea since I've heard anyone talk about a Vega steering box in a 53-56 ford truck. Definitely better choices than the Vega
The Vega steering box was/is a popular replacement for lighter weight street rod applications as it gives options for cross steering, compactness, steering shaft options and making more clearance for custom engine and exhaust. In a truck, I'd stick with rebuilding the stock box or stepping up to the CPP/Toyota if power steering is desired.
Retired here so on limited budget as usual. I need to repair / replace manual steering gear box. Would it be cost effective to install power steering or should i stay with what i have?
I am now looking at a complete power steering kit they said I must cut the steering shaft off and install steering universal joint included it appears I just need a belt as pump, bracket, and hoses are included. It is expensive so I have to sell my grandsons
