power steering conversion
power steering conversion
Has anybody tried to use 73-79 power steering components on a 1968 F100 that came with manual steering? By the way, the 78 is a F250, both 2 wheel drive. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I just finished my swap, 78f150 power steering/brakes into my 68f100 that had manual steering/brakes. The only real issue that I had was mounting the steering gear box. Power steering trucks had a crossmember with a notched out corner right where the gear box ends, gear box almost rests on the frame. My biggest suggestion to make this alot easier would be to take the driver side fender and fender apron off. Your going to be on that side quiet a bit with the gear box, power brakes setup if your going that route, and steering column. Let me know if you have any questions.
I used the pump and gear box from a '76 to convert my '69 to power steering. I had to find the driver's side engine perch from a Bumpside with power steering to allow the gear box to fit. I also had to add aproxiamately 3" to the tubing style power steering cooler to make it fit. I just used a flared fitting in the cooler line from the box. One more thing, the columns used with power steering boxes are shorter than the columns used with manual gear boxes (in Bumpsides anyway). Other than that it was pretty much a bolt in swap. I hope this helps.
Remember adding p/s on these beast does affect gas mileage some and with high gas prices does cut down on the fun driving time some what. It Was $4.29 for a while where, I live with mind for 33 yrs of driving with manual, I CAN SEE IT FOR PARKING.
But these are old classic man trucks. Oh where did those days go to when men were men.
