I have a 71 F 100. I finished putting new steering components in. The truck has manual steering now. If I go with power steering do I have to change all the components out? I thought I was going to stick with manual but it got a bit harder to turn with a bigger tire!!! GRRRRR...

help! LOL

This is a 4X2 truck, right? You shouldn't need to change anything that you've replaced. You'll need a power box and matching steering column, as it's not the same length as the manual column.

I went to the wrecking yard and I saw a few trucks around my year and noticed that in between the pump and the gear box was a itty bitty tranny cooler deal. Do I need that too? Can I use a power gear box from a F-250 or should I stick to the F-100's? Does the pitman stay the same?

Yes its a 2 wd truck.

Yes, if the F-250 has a GVW rating of 6900 lbs or less.

FoMoCo F-100, F-150, & light F-250 are all the same, centerlink is same also. You may have a problem with Strg' Col' "O-All" Length tho' if you have col shift. . . . the P/S box is a tad longer due to the internal valving etc. BUT OEM Script stuff interchanges & will work when you get it matched up right.

It should be on the Data Plate in the door jamb or on the face of the door frame, depends on the year, which I have a tendency to mix up between 65 & 79, but it's on the Data Plate, seems some had 'em on glovebox door also. Those F-250s over 6900# GVWR are same as a F-350 & just "enuff" slightly, larger, so as to not interchange.

Make sure you get the Saginaw type set up with slipper style pump & NOT Bendix Full Time (100% High PSI) type. Bendix don't steer wheels at idle & "tip toe" [no road feel] at highway speed, as 55 Buicks used to do. Bendix Systems are the ones we see guys posting on here with the most problems. They fit with OEM Stock Column. Saginaw style is the replacement for the Bendix because they are so troublesome.

Bendix Fans. . . . no rude comments please, I'm expressing my opinion here.

Also if you have a chance for an inline cooler take it, heat is not a P/S systems friend. It's a "U" shaped section of return line with cooling fins on it.

Back to the pump, get all engine brackets, bolts, & added pulley system from the same
actual engine, that is same type as your Truck has. ie FE or Windsor or 300 I-6 or 385.
Year doesn't matter as much as a matched set up for type of engine you have, does.

Gud Luk & Watch Ur Knuckles Gonzo.

Yeah, we've got to get some pics like that here. I thought I could find one of each box but happened across that one...

I'll be taking some pics when I swap out my Bendix for a Saginaw (which I have in my '72.)

Question

Dan,

You got a 5.0L, SVO, Roller, MAFS/ EFI w/ 6 Gear OD in that sunbeam yet?
[ Yeah right FBp Very Funny Har Har Har . . . . ]

AND have you ever tried a Griffith with SB Windsor? It's like trying to drive a skateboard with a V8 for motivation. The one I tried did not corner in any unbanked situation at road speed, it wanted to follow the 2nd law of motion and go straight in all 3 "Dim's" not a fun ride for me. . .
Maybe this is why there are a shortage of Griffiths?

so did you change it over? i have a 71 with manual steering, and i love it!

further, i have a friend who had a 71 with power steering, and i HATED it. the reason was, the wheels wouldn't return to a straight position when you released the steering wheel. they would continue to turn in whatever direction you happened to be pointing, which i found unnerving and unsafe.

my tech says it's because of the way the camber is set up on those early models. makes 'em prone to do that.

That would be a caster problem not camber preventing the wheel going back to the straight ahead position.
TigerDan; a Bendix box in that late of truck?
For others, (you to Dan) get the lower column mounting bracket on the firewall as well the left motor perch.
As for coolers that POS loop Ford used as a cooler must of been allowed by their bean counters, it's a joke.
Add the cooler that Super Duty trucks of around 2000 used.
The Thompson pump used on Bendix and Saginaw boxes are identical in internal parts and pressures. After going thru 11 pumps of different years and boxes, tested pressure relief springs, all were the same.

Carl, what I mean is that my '68 has a Bendix box and my '72 has a Saginaw which I plan to swap into the '68...

Sorry Dan, I read your post wrong me bad! That's right your 68 is green/white like my CS.
When you change over this would be a good time to rebuild the Thompson pump as that square ring between the pump body and reservoir is a known leaker with a old seal.
Get the "deluxe" pump rebuild kit with bushing.
Might be good to go thru the PS unit plus add a cooler.
Do it once vs later (next month) a leaker.
Hang onto that Bendix, they're becoming valuable.
Get my lathe running?
