Manual Steering Conversion

I just picked up a '67 F250 Camper Special. Is it usually a bear to steer? I'm a big guy and it takes a huge effort to turn this wheel from a parked position. Could there be something wrong w/the steering box?

Also-is it tough to convert the manual system to power?

Mabey but sounds like the typical manual steering. The conversions are usually bolt on from a power steering donor truck 67-72. Try using the forum search theres lots of past info on the changeovers.

I would check your kingpins I bet that is the cause of your hard steering.

Manual Steering Conversion

I converted my manual steering to power in my 71 F-100, gear box wise it was a peace of cake. but when it came time to install the colum back in, the power gear box is about 2 inches longer. I had to cut down the steering colum about 2 inches and weld the rag jount back on. Then it took me 2 weeks to find a bracket to hold the power steering pump. After all that, it was all worth it.

There's actually no need to cut and weld on these trucks as the power steering column from any 67-79 truck is a bolt in. Use the Ford p/s box from the same time frame and get the pump and brackets from a truck with the same engine.

Don't forget to grab the motor mount perch, the power steering one is about a 1/2" narrower than the non-power steering one is. Otherwise your power steering box won't clear the motor mount perch and you'll have to do some grinding. One hint...getting that power steering gear box up in place to bolt on to the frame is a bugbear. I could not push it up from underneath by myself, it was too heavy and bulky. Have a friend help you with it, tie a rope or cable to it and one person pulls up on it from under the hood while the other pushes and/or uses a jack to push the box in from underneath.

Thumbs up Manual Steering Conversion

A really simple solution to my tough steering problem. Grease the ball joints!
It steers much better now. I think I'll still eventually do the power conversion, though.

Thanks.
