Tachometer not working

I have a 1997 f250. My tachometer will not work sometimes. Usually, when I start my truck up, it will work for a little while, and then shut off. I also think that sometimes it doesn't read my rpm right, as it'll only move a small amount. The way it goes on and off resembles a loose connection/wire. Is this problem from a loose connection or wire? If so How can I check for any loose connection or wires?

Yes. The gas gauge though will go up and down but I'm pretty sure that's just because of the gas sensor, and not a gauge problem
