Hey everybody, I’m getting ready to do an oil change on my 92’ f250 with the 7.3 idi, but I have a couple questions. First is there a specific brand I should buy for the filter and oil? And should I stick with 15w-40 or should I use a different viscosity? And finally, is there any other maintenance I should do when I change my oil?
Motorcraft filters are available everywhere and work great. Your call, I however use the Baldwin filters.
Nothing wrong with any name brand big truck oil that you find at the truck stops. Dello, Rotella, Mobile, and such. All are available at your local stores with millions of millions of miles with each brand proving quality.
Many will agree that 15W-40 is the proper oil, some will say that maybe even 5W-40 is better in the way up north places but I have never had issues with 15W-40 T5 Rotella everywhere I go.
Check the differentials.
Check all hoses.
Check shocks.
Check shackles and springs.
Get dirty enough that the woman in your life has issues with you coming through the house after.
Grease all fittings, wiggle everything. Make sure if it wiggles it should and if not fix it.
Good list to check above, one thing I’ll add is to check your air filter if you don’t know how long it’s been in there.
3/4 inch wrench on drain bolt. Just a heads up if you ever need to replace your drain bolt, some parts places will try to sell you a metric threaded drain bolt and copper washer as a replacement. The threads are 1/2-20 iirc, and it’s a plastic nylon sealing washer from the factory. My Ford dealer had the drain bolt and washer on the shelf for $5. No need to replace the bolt or washer unless they are damaged or not sealing.
Any good name brand oil will do I think, I always use Motorcraft filters on my trucks. To each their own however.
The owners manual supplement for 94 year model says SAE 30 is preferred when ambient temp is above 32F. You will have to decide if Ford knew what they were talking about.
